App permissions

What the Android app asks for, when, and why

Last updated: 12 September 2026

We only request access when a feature needs it. You can run most checks without optional permissions.

Applies to the Digital Guardian Android app (beta, version 0.8.14). iOS permissions will be listed here when that app ships. In the app, open Profile → App permissions for the same summary.

We do not read your SMS, contacts, call logs, or full photo gallery. Login uses the mobile number you type — we do not read your SIM.

Permission list

  • Internet

Required for online features · When: Whenever you use online features

Sends scam checks to our servers and loads your account history. Required for the app to work online.

  • Network status

Required for online features · When: Whenever you use online features

Shows a clear “no internet” message instead of a vague error. We do not track your location.

  • Camera

Optional · When: You open QR scan

Used only on the QR scan screen to read a code in real time. Not used in the background.

  • Photos / files

Optional · When: You pick a screenshot check

Screenshot check uses Android’s file picker — you choose one image. We do not scan your entire gallery.

  • Notifications

Optional · When: You allow notifications

Optional alerts (e.g. family safety or account updates). You can deny and still use checks.

  • Caller ID & spam (Android role)

Optional · When: You turn on Protection / caller screening

Optional. Android may ask you to set Digital Guardian as a call screening app so we can warn or block known scam numbers. Not required for message or link checks.

For data we store when you sign in or run checks, see our Privacy Policy. App status: Android private beta — mobile apps on home.
