About this scam type

QR Code

QR code scams redirect to malicious UPI collect requests or phishing sites. Paste the URL or UPI string the QR opened — image scanning is coming in a later phase.

Who is targeted: Market vendors, parking spots, and anyone scanning QR codes from stickers or messages.

Warning signs

  • !QR sticker placed over a legitimate merchant QR
  • !QR in message asking payment to unknown VPA
  • !Scan to receive refund or prize
  • !Collect request triggered after scanning

What to do

  1. 1Verify payee name inside UPI app before approving
  2. 2Do not scan QR codes from unsolicited messages
  3. 3At shops, confirm QR matches the business name shown
  4. 4Reject collect requests you did not expect
