What to do if you were scammed

Practical steps for India — preserve evidence, report officially, and protect yourself from follow-up fraud.

Important: Digital Guardian cannot recover lost money or freeze scammer accounts. We help you check scams before you act and document evidence after an attempt.

1. Stop — do not send more money

Hang up. Do not pay “fees”, “taxes”, or “verification” amounts. Scammers often ask for a second payment after the first.

2. Preserve evidence immediately

Screenshot messages, UPI receipts, caller numbers, and emails. Do not delete chats. Note date, time, and amount transferred.

3. Call Cyber Helpline 1930

Dial 1930 from any phone in India. Follow their guidance for your situation — they can help with next steps.

4. Report on cybercrime.gov.in

File an official complaint with as much detail as possible. Keep your acknowledgement / reference number.

5. Contact your bank / UPI app

Call the fraud helpline printed on your bank card or inside your banking app. Ask about blocking further debits and dispute options — act quickly.

6. Warn family and trusted contacts

Scammers may target relatives next. Tell family not to send money on your behalf without verifying on a known number.

7. Build an incident report (optional)

Signed-in users can create a timeline and export a PDF summary for police or bank complaints.
