Friend-in-emergency scams use hijacked WhatsApp accounts or new numbers claiming to be family in urgent need of money. Always call the person on their old known number.

Who is targeted: Parents, grandparents, and close friends — emotional urgency bypasses caution.

Warning signs

  • !New number claiming to be son, daughter, or close friend
  • !Urgent money request — do not tell others
  • !Story about lost phone, accident, or arrest
  • !Refusal to voice or video call

What to do
