Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about free scam checking.

Getting started

Is Digital Guardian really free?+

Yes — every safety tool on this website is free to use with no payment, signup, or credit card required. Anonymous visitors can run up to 5 checks per day (per device/IP) so the service stays available for everyone. You get the full result: risk score, detected signals, do-not-do list, and shareable link. Optional paid PROTECT features (caller screening, family alerts) may come with mobile apps later — core scam checking will remain free.

How many safety tools are available?+

We offer 47 dedicated check tools, grouped into five categories on the home page: Messages & notices, Identity & access, Links & QR, Payments & bills, and Money & jobs. Each tool is tuned for a specific scam pattern common in India — from WhatsApp KYC and digital arrest to UPI collect requests and Telegram earning schemes. Scroll to Free tools on the home page or use search to find the right one.

Read full page →
Which tool should I use?+

Match the tool to what you received: WhatsApp forward → WhatsApp Check; suspicious link → Check Link; unknown phone number → Phone Number; payment or UPI ID → Before Paying; CBI/ED/police threat → Government Notice or Digital arrest check; job or task offer → Job Offer or Part-Time Task. When unsure, Check Message works as a general starting point — it runs the same safety engine with broad rules. Category-specific tools add extra signals and advice relevant to that scam type.

Read full page →
Do I need to create an account?+

No account is needed for web checks today. Open any tool, paste the message/link/number, and tap Check — results appear in seconds. We do not ask for your phone number, email, or Aadhaar to run a check. A free account (planned with mobile apps) will add check history, higher daily limits, and family alerts — but the core experience will stay account-free.

Read full page →
Is Digital Guardian affiliated with the government or my bank?+

No. Digital Guardian is a product of Digital Fraud Safety India Pvt. Ltd. — an independent consumer safety company. We are not CBI, ED, RBI, TRAI, Income Tax, police, or any bank or wallet provider. Scammers often impersonate these names; our Government Notice tool exists to help you spot fake threats, not to act on behalf of agencies. Always verify through official channels you find yourself (bank number on your card, government .gov.in sites, official app stores).

Read full page →

Safety, accuracy & trust

Can you guarantee something is safe?+

Never. We will not tell you something is 100% safe or legit — even when our score is low. Scammers constantly invent new scripts, clone voices, and use fresh phone numbers that rules may not have seen yet. A low score only means we did not find strong scam patterns in what you pasted. Always confirm payee names in your UPI app, call banks on the number printed on your card, and visit official websites directly — not via links in messages.

Read full page →
How do checks work technically?+

Checks run through a safety engine built for Indian scams. First, deterministic rules match patterns — urgency language, fake government phrases, suspicious URLs, risky country codes (+92, +234), UPI red flags, and known scam scripts in English and Hindi/Hinglish. For ambiguous scores (roughly the middle band), a second structured analysis pass adds extra signals without treating guesses as facts. Results include every matched signal so you can see exactly why we flagged something — no black box.

Read full page →
What if the result is wrong?+

Use the thumbs up/down feedback on your result page — it helps us tune rules for real-world scams. False negatives (a scam marked low) can happen with novel or highly customized fraud; false positives (legitimate message marked high) can happen with urgent but genuine bank alerts. When in doubt, pause before paying or sharing OTP regardless of our score. If you lost money, report to cybercrime.gov.in and your bank — our tool helps prevent loss, not recover funds.

Read full page →
Can a scam slip through undetected?+

Yes. Well-crafted, personalised, or brand-new scams may not match our rules yet — especially voice clones, deepfake video, or messages with no obvious keywords. We are designed to fail conservatively: warn when patterns match, stay cautious when unsure, and never falsely reassure you with a 'safe' label. Treat Digital Guardian as one layer of defence alongside your own verification, caller ID apps, and bank security settings.

Read full page →
Why do you show detected signals?+

Transparency builds trust. Instead of a mystery score, you see each pattern we matched — e.g. 'Urgency language', 'Suspicious URL', 'International prefix +92', 'Government impersonation'. Signals explain why the score went up and help you learn what to watch for next time. If you disagree with a signal, use feedback — we map every signal to a specific rule we can improve.

Read full page →

Privacy & data

Do you ask for OTP, UPI PIN, or passwords?+

Never — not on the website, not in email, not on WhatsApp, and not on any call claiming to be us. We only analyze text, URLs, or numbers you paste into a check form. If anyone asking for OTP, UPI PIN, CVV, Aadhaar OTP, or remote-access install says they are from Digital Guardian, that is itself a scam. Real checks need only the suspicious content — never your credentials.

Read full page →
What happens to content I submit?+

Your input is sent to our safety engine, analyzed, and used to generate your result (score, signals, advice). We do not sell message content, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for marketing. Anonymous checks are not linked to your name or phone number. Retention periods and technical details are in our Privacy Policy — we aim to keep storage minimal and India-first where possible.

Read full page →
Can someone see what I checked?+

Anonymous web checks are not tied to your identity in our system. Each result gets a unique link — only people you share that link with can view it. Do not submit someone else's private messages, photos, or financial details without their permission. Avoid pasting your own Aadhaar, PAN, or full bank account numbers unless necessary for the check context.

Read full page →
Is checking a sextortion message safe?+

Yes — paste only the text of the threat (not intimate images). We analyze it securely and minimize what we store. Do not pay the blackmailer; payment rarely stops extortion and marks you as a repeat target. Block the account, preserve screenshots, and report to cybercrime.gov.in (1930 helpline). If minors are involved, contact local police immediately — do not handle it alone.

Scam types we cover

Can you check digital arrest / CBI / ED calls?+

Yes — use Government Notice or the Digital arrest check tool. Real CBI, ED, police, and courts do not 'digitally arrest' people over WhatsApp or video call, demand UPI payment for 'settlement', or ask you to stay on camera while transferring money. These are always scams. End the call, tell someone you trust, and run the script through our checker. Never install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or similar remote-access apps at a caller's request.

Read full page →
Can you check WhatsApp KYC or lottery messages?+

Yes — WhatsApp Check and Lottery & Prize tools cover these. WhatsApp, Meta, and banks never ask for KYC via forwarded messages or random links. Lottery scams ask for a 'processing fee' or 'tax' before releasing fake winnings. Paste the full message including any links or phone numbers. If the score is high or critical, do not click links, do not pay, and block the sender.

Read full page →
Can you verify a UPI ID before I pay?+

Yes — use Before Paying. Enter the VPA (name@bank), amount context, and any message from the requester. We flag personal VPAs for business payments, mismatch names, and common scam narratives. Always verify the payee name shown inside your UPI app (PhonePe, GPay, Paytm) matches who you intend to pay — scammers often send collect requests with misleading display names.

Read full page →
Can you check phone numbers from +92 or other countries?+

Yes — Phone Number tool flags high-risk international prefixes (+92 Pakistan, +234 Nigeria, +880 Bangladesh, and others) commonly used in scams targeting Indians. A foreign number does not always mean fraud (relatives abroad, legitimate businesses), but unexpected WhatsApp KYC or lottery calls from these codes are a major red flag. Combine our check with Truecaller or your phone's spam filter for best protection.

Read full page →
Do you check job, task, and Telegram earning scams?+

Yes — Job Offer, Part-Time Task, and Telegram Scam tools cover registration-fee jobs, 'like and earn' schemes, paid Telegram groups, and fake HR on WhatsApp. Legitimate employers do not ask for upfront fees via UPI for 'training' or 'verification'. Telegram channels promising daily ₹5,000–₹10,000 for simple tasks are almost always advance-fee fraud. Never pay to 'unlock' earnings.

Read full page →
What about investment and crypto scams?+

Use Investment Offer and Crypto & Wallet tools. Red flags include guaranteed returns, pressure to invest quickly, WhatsApp/Telegram 'stock tips', and links to unregistered trading apps. Verify any advisor or platform on sebi.gov.in directly — do not use links sent in messages. Crypto scams often start with small withdrawals to build trust, then trap larger deposits.

Read full page →
Can I check a screenshot or voice note?+

Yes. Screenshot tool accepts image upload (we extract text via OCR) or pasted text if you already copied it. Voice note tool accepts a transcript — use your phone's speech-to-text or type what was said. Voice clones and AI-generated audio are hard to detect from text alone; if a 'relative' calls from a new number asking for money, call back on their known number before sending anything.

Read full page →
Can you check IRCTC ticket or Tatkal agent messages?+

Yes — IRCTC & Train Ticket tool. Book tickets only at irctc.co.in or the official IRCTC app — never through agents who ask for UPI payment via SMS links. Fake 'Tatkal confirmation', refund, and cancellation messages with payment links are extremely common, especially during festival season. Verify PNR status only on the official site.

Read full page →
Someone on OLX wants me to refund extra money — is that normal?+

No — this is one of India's most common marketplace scams. Use OLX & Marketplace Buyer tool. A buyer 'accidentally' sends extra via UPI, asks you to refund the difference, then reverses or disputes the original payment — you lose both the goods and the refund. Never refund 'overpayments' outside the platform's official flow. Insist on in-person cash or platform escrow only.

Read full page →
I got a UPI collect request I didn't expect — what do I do?+

Do not approve it — ever, even for ₹1. Use UPI Collect Request tool and paste the request details. Collect requests pull money from your account; scammers use small test amounts to verify active accounts, then send larger requests. Decline in your UPI app, block the VPA, and never enter UPI PIN to 'see' or 'reject' a request. Your bank never needs a collect request to 'verify' your account.

Read full page →
A friend messaged from a new number asking for urgent money — real?+

Often not — use Friend in Emergency tool. Scammers hack or clone WhatsApp accounts, or impersonate relatives from new numbers ('lost my phone, send ₹20,000 urgently'). Always call the person on their old saved number or video-call a known contact before sending money. Ask a question only they would know. Genuine emergencies are rare; urgency plus new number is a classic pattern.

Read full page →
Can you check fake traffic challan or e-challan SMS?+

Yes — Traffic Challan tool. Fake challan SMS with payment links spike around holidays. Verify only on official Parivahan (parivahan.gov.in) or your state transport department website — type the URL yourself. Police do not send challan payment links via random SMS domains. Never pay through links in unsolicited messages.

Read full page →
Is this Netflix or Hotstar renewal email real?+

Use Subscription & OTT Renewal tool. Scammers send fake renewal emails and SMS with links to phishing pages that steal card details. Manage Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon Prime, and other subscriptions only inside the official app or by typing the official website. Check the sender email domain carefully — legitimate services use their own domains, not Gmail or random .in sites.

Read full page →
Someone shared stock tips on Telegram — can you check?+

Yes — Demat & Stock Tips and Investment Offer tools. 'Pump and dump' groups promote low-volume stocks, then sell when followers buy — you lose money. SEBI-registered advisors do not operate via anonymous Telegram channels asking for upfront fees. Verify registration on sebi.gov.in; never trade on apps linked from WhatsApp or Telegram without independent verification.

Read full page →
Can you check forex or binary trading app pitches?+

Yes — Forex & Binary Trading tool. Many platforms targeting Indians via Instagram and WhatsApp lack proper SEBI/RBI regulation. Promises of fixed daily returns, 'account managers' on Telegram, and pressure to deposit more to 'unlock' withdrawals are classic fraud signs. If you cannot verify the entity on official regulator websites, treat it as high risk.

Read full page →
I got an RTO or failed delivery message — is it real?+

Use RTO & Failed Delivery or Courier tools. Fake 'delivery failed — pay ₹99 redelivery fee' SMS lead to phishing pages or UPI fraud. Check tracking on the courier's official website (Delhivery, Blue Dart, India Post) using the tracking ID from your original order confirmation — not from the suspicious SMS. Amazon and Flipkart handle redelivery through their apps, not random payment links.

Understanding your result

What do the risk levels mean?+

Low (typically score 0–29): few or no strong scam patterns — still not 'safe', verify independently. Suspicious (30–59): some warning signs; proceed with caution and double-check. High (60–79): strong scam indicators; do not pay, share OTP, or install apps. Critical (80–100): act immediately — stop the transaction, end the call, and follow the do-not-do list. The exact score and signals explain why you landed in that band.

Read full page →
Why does a clean message still show low risk instead of safe?+

We deliberately never label anything '100% safe'. A polite, short message may contain no matched patterns but still be from a scammer testing contact or building trust before the real ask. Low risk means 'we did not find strong evidence of scam' — not 'trust this sender'. Always use official apps and known phone numbers for anything involving money or credentials.

Read full page →
What are detected signals?+

Signals are specific patterns our engine matched in your input — for example 'Fake suspension threat', 'Suspicious URL domain', 'Urgency language', 'International prefix', or 'UPI collect pattern'. Each signal adds to your score and appears in the result so you can understand the reasoning. They also teach you what to look for in future messages without running a check every time.

Read full page →
What should I do if result says critical but I think it's real?+

Pause anyway — five minutes of verification beats losing lakhs. Hang up if on a call. Verify through a channel you initiate: call your bank on the number on your debit card, visit the official .gov.in site, or open the app from the Play Store/App Store directly. Scammers exploit urgency; real banks and agencies give you time. If still unsure after independent verification, ask a trusted family member before acting.

Read full page →
Can two different tools give different results for the same content?+

Yes, slightly. Each tool passes a category hint that prioritises rules relevant to that scam type — Government Notice weighs impersonation patterns more heavily than Check Link. The core engine is the same, but signals and advice may differ. For best results, pick the tool closest to what you received. If scores differ, trust the higher-risk result and verify anyway.

Read full page →
Should I still call the police if the score is low?+

If you already lost money, shared OTP, or feel physically threatened — report regardless of our score. Call Cyber Helpline 1930, file at cybercrime.gov.in, and contact your bank's fraud desk immediately. Our tool is designed to help before you act; it is not a substitute for law enforcement, legal advice, or bank fraud investigation. Low score does not mean 'no crime occurred'.

Limits & technical

Why did I hit a rate limit?+

Anonymous users get 5 free checks per day per IP address to prevent abuse and keep the service free for genuine users. If you see a rate-limit message, wait until the next day or try from a different network. We are building free accounts (with mobile apps) for higher limits and saved history. If you hit the limit during an emergency, ask a family member to run the check from their device.

Read full page →
Why did my check fail or show an error?+

Common causes: internet connection dropped, input too short (minimum ~3 characters), or the safety API is temporarily unavailable. If you self-host, ensure the backend is running at the configured API URL. Try refreshing, shortening very long pasted text, or switching from image upload to pasted text. Persistent errors — contact us at support@digitalfraudsafe.in with the tool name and approximate time.

Read full page →
Can I check QR codes by uploading an image?+

Not yet for direct QR decoding. Paste the URL or UPI string the QR opened after scanning with your phone's camera — then use Check Link or Before Paying. Image-based QR scanning is planned for a future update. Never scan unknown QR codes in public places or pay through QR shared by strangers without verifying the payee name in your UPI app.

Read full page →
Is Hindi language supported?+

Yes for pasted content — you can submit messages in Hindi, Hinglish, or mixed English-Hindi. Our rules match many Indian scam phrases in Devanagari and romanised form (e.g. 'KYC band ho jayega', 'digital arrest', 'mat batana'). The website UI is primarily in English today; improved Hindi interface labels are planned. Typing in Hindi uses proper Devanagari font rendering in check forms and results.

Read full page →
Can I share results with family on WhatsApp?+

Yes — completed checks include a Share on WhatsApp button with your risk level, a short summary, and a link to the full result. Useful for warning parents or seniors about a suspicious message they forwarded. The link works without an account. Remind family never to share OTP or pay based only on a shared result — they should read the signals and verify independently.

Read full page →
How is Digital Guardian different from Truecaller or spam filters?+

Truecaller and phone spam filters identify callers and block known spam numbers — they do not read full message content, payment context, or scam scripts. Digital Guardian analyzes what was said or written: URLs, UPI IDs, government impersonation language, job scam patterns, and more. Use both together — Truecaller for incoming calls, Digital Guardian before you click, pay, or share OTP.

Read full page →
Does the website work without the backend API?+

The website loads without the API, but scam checks require the safety engine backend to analyze your input. Visitor stats use a local fallback. For local development, run the API (default localhost:5080) alongside the web app. In production, checks run against our hosted safety engine — if it is down, you will see an error instead of a fake result.

Can businesses or NGOs use this for customers?+

Yes — banks, cooperatives, housing societies, and NGOs can link to our free tools for customer awareness and pre-payment checks. Contact support@digitalfraudsafe.in for partnership, embed options, or bulk awareness campaigns planned in later phases. Do not present our results as your organisation's official fraud decision — they are advisory only.

Do you store data outside India?+

Digital Guardian is designed India-first — infrastructure and data handling aim to keep processing and storage within India where feasible. Exact providers and regions may evolve as we scale; current details are in our Privacy Policy. We do not sell data overseas for advertising. If this matters for your organisation, read the policy or contact us for deployment questions.

What browsers and devices are supported?+

Any modern browser on Android, iPhone, tablet, or desktop — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. No app install required for web checks. The site is responsive and works on 4G/5G mobile connections. For best OCR results on screenshots, use clear, uncropped images with readable text. JavaScript must be enabled.

If you were scammed

Can Digital Guardian recover my lost money?+

No — we are not a bank, payment gateway, or law enforcement agency and cannot reverse UPI, card, or wire transfers. Speed matters: call your bank's 24×7 fraud helpline immediately, share transaction IDs, and ask to block further debits. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930. Preserve all screenshots, chat logs, phone numbers, and UPI references for the investigation.

Read full page →
Where do I report a scam in India?+

Primary channels: National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) and Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 (available 24/7). For financial fraud, also report to your bank and local police if advised. Save evidence before blocking: screenshots, full message text, sender numbers, UPI transaction IDs, and any app install records. FIR may be required for larger amounts — the portal guides you through the process.

Read full page →
I already shared my OTP — what now?+

Act within minutes: call your bank's fraud helpline (number on card or passbook), block debit/credit cards, disable UPI on all apps, and change net-banking passwords from a different trusted device. Check recent transactions for unauthorised transfers. File at cybercrime.gov.in with exact time and amount. Do not share another OTP with anyone claiming to 'help reverse' the fraud — that is a follow-up scam.

Read full page →
Someone installed AnyDesk on my phone — what do I do?+

Disconnect from Wi‑Fi and mobile data immediately. Uninstall AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport, or any remote-access app you did not install yourself. From a clean device, change all banking and email passwords; enable two-factor authentication. Call your bank to monitor for unauthorised access. Report to cybercrime.gov.in — remote access is commonly used in digital arrest and refund scams to watch you enter OTP.

Read full page →
I approved a UPI collect request by mistake — can I reverse it?+

Contact your bank's fraud helpline immediately with the UPI transaction reference (UTR). UPI transfers are usually instant and reversal depends on timing, recipient bank cooperation, and whether funds are still in the scammer's account — success is not guaranteed. Acting within minutes improves chances. Also file on cybercrime.gov.in. Future prevention: never approve unexpected collect requests, even for ₹1.

I paid a scammer already — will checking here help get money back?+

Running a check now helps confirm it was a scam and gives you shareable evidence (signals, score) for your police and bank complaint — but it does not trigger refunds. Focus on bank fraud desk, cybercrime.gov.in, and 1930. Do not pay anyone who promises to 'recover' your money for a fee — recovery scams target victims twice. Block the scammer after saving proof.

Read full page →
Should I block the scammer's number?+

Yes — after screenshotting chats and saving numbers for your complaint. Blocking stops further harassment but scammers rotate numbers and SIMs quickly. Report the pattern on cybercrime.gov.in so authorities can track campaigns. Warn family members about the same script. Consider enabling spam filtering (Truecaller, Jio/Google spam protection) in addition to blocking individual numbers.

Mobile apps & future

When will Android and iOS apps launch?+

Target launch is Q1 2027. Planned features include Scam Mode (one-tap check during suspicious calls), family alerts for high-risk results, caller screening hints, push notifications for new scam patterns, and 90-day check history. See the Mobile apps section on our home page for the full roadmap. Email support@digitalfraudsafe.in if you want early access or beta testing updates.

Will there be a paid plan?+

Core safety checking will stay free on web and app — same as today. Optional PROTECT tier may add subscription features in later phases: proactive caller screening, family member alerts, higher daily limits, and priority support. Free users will always be able to run essential scam checks without payment. We will announce pricing clearly before any paid feature launches.

How checks help before you act

A quick paste takes seconds. Here is what people do when a message, call script, or payment request feels wrong.

🔴 Critical Risk

Retired teacher · Pune

Digital arrest call — did not pay ₹80,000

On a video call, scammers posing as CBI officers said her account was linked to money laundering and demanded immediate UPI payment. Her son pasted the threat into Government Notice — critical risk, with signals for impersonation and payment demand. She hung up and filed on cybercrime.gov.in instead of transferring.

WhatsApp KYC link — closed before clicking

A forwarded message claimed her WhatsApp would be blocked in 24 hours unless she verified KYC via a link. She ran WhatsApp Check before tapping — high risk score flagged fake suspension language and a suspicious domain. She deleted the message and warned her hostel group.

Surprise UPI collect — declined ₹15,000

After approving a ₹1 'verification' collect from an unknown VPA, a ₹15,000 collect request appeared minutes later. He pasted both into UPI Collect Request — critical score on the large request. He declined, blocked the VPA, and switched to cash-only for unknown buyers that week.
